Brow Tattooing vs Microblading — What's the Difference?

f you've been researching semi-permanent brow treatments, you've likely come across both brow tattooing and microblading — and wondered what exactly sets them apart. While both treatments deliver beautiful, long-lasting brows, they differ significantly in technique, results and longevity. Here's everything you need to know before booking.

What is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent technique that uses a fine, handheld blade to create small, hair-like strokes in the skin. Pigment is deposited into the upper layers of the dermis, mimicking the appearance of natural brow hairs. The results look incredibly natural and are ideal for clients who want to fill in sparse areas or redefine their brow shape.

Because microblading sits relatively shallow in the skin, it typically lasts between 12 to 18 months before a touch-up is needed. It does fade faster than other brow tattooing methods, particularly on oily skin types.

What is Brow Tattooing?

Brow tattooing — sometimes referred to as cosmetic tattooing or permanent makeup — uses a machine to deposit pigment deeper into the skin. There are several styles available, including powder brows (a soft, filled-in look), ombre brows (darker at the tail, lighter at the front) and combination brows (hair strokes blended with shading).

Brow tattooing generally lasts longer than microblading — typically 2 to 3 years — and tends to hold up better on oily or mature skin types.

Which One is Right for You?

The best choice depends on your skin type, lifestyle and the look you're after. During a consultation at Chantilly Skin & Brow, our brow artists will assess your skin, discuss your goals and recommend the most suitable treatment for you.

Both treatments require a touch-up appointment 6 to 8 weeks after your initial session to perfect the results and ensure long-lasting colour retention.
